'Un Ojo Inglés en La Carlota'

I was approached last year by the Mayoress and the Culture Department of our local town to mount an exhibition of photos.  Their original proposal was that this would celebrate the opening of the refurbished 'posada' (coaching inn), which the Council is turning into a Tourist Centre and exhibition space.
However, since the rebuilding will not be finished until at least the end of 2009, we agreed that my exhibition would take place this year and the theme would of the town and the surrounding nine villages which are part of the district of La Carlota. We would then announce a project for the local schools and colleges to take part in a competition to look at their home town, with a view as to what the future might hold for the community.  The inaugural exhibition will be the work of the prizewinning entrants (I have agreed to be a judge, as long as I'm not the only one!).
Thus I have had a fascinating year, having 'carte blanche' to take my camera any and everywhere - and best of all, being given a tremendous welcome by everyone.  The result being an an extremely varied exhibition of some 60 images - showing the seasons, colour and amazing light; the fun and the fiestas, as well as the ordinary
everyday life of an area that of course they take for granted, but for  'An English Eye in La Carlota'  is different- and I think the citizens were rather taken with seeing themselves and their neighbourhoods as something rather special.  And, bless their hearts, when I was made to give a speech in Spanish at the opening, they cheered me (though I'm fairly sure that if I'd given it in Mongolian, they'd still have given me a standing ovation!).
